Tumblr: The Unspoken Truth – Don’t Talk About TUMBLR

The users of Tumblr are a very serious bunch.  They have created rules about they world of blogging.  The number one rule of Tumblr is to NOT TALK ABOUT TUMBLR.  I find it to be a very weird rule.  But in the minds of it’s prime users, its a double edge sword.  They want you to visit their blogs and they will tell you to visit their blogs, but you are not allowed (or they will hurt you down and hate you) if you judge them on their choice of posts on tumblr.

My take on Tumblr.  Tumblr is a pretty cool blogging network of people that are very visual and expressive.  Tumblr is the Twitter of the blogging world, in which you follow the people who post the things you like to see.  Tumblr is what Twitter could of been if it was to compete with Facebook.  Tumblr to me, is filled with copyright infringement media and porn.  Tumblr may claim more views than other blog services such as WordPress, Blogger, Typepad, LiveJournal, but it’s value for words and content is not there.  Tumblr has a hard time to be indexed into Google based on its very much overly used reblog feature of content and lack of originality, with it’s primary users re-blogging very explicit photos and other self promotional content (in which is considered more of duplicated content and spam).  Tumblr is more a perfect setting for the younger crowd to express themselves and what they actually enjoy seeing, though not wanting to be judged on their likes.

So the question is do I have a Tumblr?  Why yes, but for me to use it, I rather create something original and rich of content than follow the crowd of unoriginal re-noters, re-bloggers, and more…Please note there are amazing blogs and content by people that uses Tumblr as their main blogging platform, but it’s very hard for them to be noticed based on the overcrowding of spam and not being able to greatly be indexed into google and other search engines.  Also being side tracked by other reblogging the same exact popular posts and failing to including new and amazing posts.  Also haters too.

I love WordPress, and it’s my number one blog service of choice.  But you be seen you can always share your writing (aka distribution) to other places and services.  Always remember to back link your WordPress post as the original writing.  Hopefully I can bring some awesomeness to Tumblr.

What do you think of my post?  Do you have a Tumblr?  Do you use WordPress, Tumblr, Blogger more than the other.

Thanks for reading
Richardo

  1. Your post pretty much sums up why I made the decision to leave Tumblr in favor of WordPress. I love the simplicity of Tumblr and it’s a fantastic way to post photographs, but sifting through the debris to find one or two good posts wasn’t worth it to me.

    1. I hear you on that one…welcome to WordPress. 🙂 I hope you like it hear…I may be a new way to blog and super options instead of simple, but the results will be worth it. I just got featured by WordPress on their front page in which Tumblr doesn’t have and I just received 1500 views in half a day…look for yourself…www.wordpress.com (richardo’s creative lifestyle in nyc)

  2. I agree with you, it’s not what I would call a blogging site … When I think of blogging, I think of WordPress … When I think of a creative outlet, I think of Tumblr …

I have a Tumblr … And yes, that’s because of my place in the younger generation, what I’m trying to achieve by using Tumblr is a short interaction with people of my age group to say this is what inspired me today (since I no longer have a Facebook page) …

    1. I hear you…it’s all good. I mean you can always do both. I am not knocking Tumblr for its methods. I am just calling out the facts of what it can’t do. Remember I have a Tumblr myself and I tend to use it a lot. I just want to add the creativity its know for more and more. You just got to enjoy what you like to do. 🙂 Dont’t worry and be awesome.

  3. You know, I signed up for tumblr over a year ago. I won’t knock it, but I just didn’t get it- it seems to lack coherence. WordPress requires as much effort as any other blog, and people might use it to re-post – my blog is an archive of media consumption, at the moment – but the WordPress community at large would flip out if all someone did on their blog was re-post.

    1. Yea I a way they would because it’s their comment and more people on wordpress post content they own or wants people to view their post on their blog. But some are happy to let you do it based on the post or content. I think people knock wordpress about it’s difficult in which they run to tumblr. But wordpress is very easy and simple, just got to know what you want to do. Tumblr don’t allow deep indexing into google and/or offer the great values of wordpress. My best answer, think MYSPACE vs FACEBOOK, who was more popular and open ans easy, then who won at the end? hmmmmm
Thanks for sharing…I love it. Let me know what you think…plus I am here to assist on wordpress if you need or hit me on twitter at http://www.twitter.com/rawmultimedia

  5. I’m still a new WordPress user. From my very narrow point of view, I see that WordPress has a better – what’s the words – audience? structure? it just feels better.

As for that number one rule, it sounds familiar. I wonder where have I heard it before …. LOL

  6. “Tumblr may claim more views than other blog services such as WordPress, Blogger, Typepad, LiveJournal, but it’s value for words and content is not there.” I like how Twitter was not in that list. When I first joined Twitter when it was the hot new thing, I thought that I would like it catering to my short attention span. But I found the character limit way too parochial. Tumblr took some warming to, but I love it now.

I use my Tumblr and WordPress for different purposes. I use Tumblr mainly to aggregate funny/interesting videos, pics, and links and follow other people with similar taste. It’s not something I go to to read or write anything serious.

  7. I have a Tumblr and a WordPress account. I prefer WordPress – at least for actual content. Tumblr is useful for photographers – it’s easy to use and very good on the eye. But it also seems to lean towards the juvenile, I think.
